Our Goals
Article by Shawn Dady on July 25, 2012
Our goals are to make some big changes to the agricultural laws of Tennessee. We want this state to be one that is friendly to small, local farms. We are a group of like-minded people who feel that all Tennesseans should have access to fresh, unpasteurized milk if we so choose.
We feel strongly that small farmers should have the right to sell all their produce, including dairy, poultry, and beef RIGHT OFF THE FARM and without government interference. We also feel that the raw milk farmers should not be tied to selling only to the big processors. This creates monopoly and is against our free market system.
All farmers should also be able to process their meats themselves, on their own farms, without having to take the meat to a USDA approved processor. This only increases the price of healthy food to the customer, as the processor adds about $1 (or more) per pound onto the products. Healthy food should not cost so much. It needs to be accessible to rich and poor alike.
Farmers would not be inclined to sell dirty or bad meat to their customers–they wouldn’t stay in business very long doing that.
Giving the farmers the freedom to produce and process the meat products themselves incentivizes them to do a good job and produce a quality product. They want to stay in business, not go out of business. We do not need big brother USDA looking over our shoulder.
